J E Scott – Voluntary Milking System (VMS)
Awarded £34,710(40% of the total project costs of £89,000) of LEADER funding from Making it Local towards the Purchase of a voluntary milking system (VMS) to increase farm productivity and improve animal health and wellbeing.
Ridge Hill farm has been in operation in excess of 35 years. It is run by Andrew Scott.
The farm produces Jersey milk and has 70 dairy cows and 60 followers on 64.7 hectares of grass. The milk from the farm is sold under contract to Arla.
Andrew applied for a grant to install a voluntary milking machine, which will allows the cows to choose when they want to be milked, this is a wonderful system allowing the cows themselves to decide when they are ready. The VMS will also reduce cases of mastitis as well as having other health benefits. The long term plan for the farm is to improve the milking herd and milk produced.
